Great day of paddle boarding on Johnson Lake in Banff. The water wasn’t even that cold, considering we were surrounded by snowy mountains!

The mountain and lake views are just non-stop at B $The mountain and lake views are just non-stop at Banff. Greatly enjoying our time here— the 5 days won’t be enough to experience more than a small fraction of the wonders here!$

I had an awesome 40th birthday today. I couldn't

I had an awesome 40th birthday today. I couldn't have asked for a better place to spend it, outdoors in central Oregon with my family. The girls were super sweet and gave me all kinds of home-made presents. We spent the morning on a picturesque hike a Smith Rock State Park-- thank you Sarah for taking the girls for a bit and letting me ramble up the mountain by myself!!

While we've been relaxing out in central Oregon, Sarah and I have been trying our best to learn the art of vlogging so we can turn all the little videos we record of our trips into something more cohesive and interesting. What we've learned so far: it's impossible to capture everything spontaneously and recreating scenes (aka acting), interviewing ourselves and narrating is harder than we thought!! Stay tuned, we'll have a video ready shortly after we get home!

We found a great spot to camp on BLM land 10 minutes outside of Smith Rock State Park in central Oregon. When we arrived Thursday afternoon there were half a dozen other campers scattered throughout the area. It was Memorial Day weekend and all the official campgrounds in the state were closed, so by Friday evening the BLM area was starting to fill up.

After two full months of isolating at home, we finally ventured out to find some BLM land (to isolate away from home). We were all bouncing off the walls a bit and really just needed some place where the girls could run around more than they can in our postage-stamp sized backyard.

We're headed out to the eastern side of the cascades where there's a bit more sunshine currently.

Wow, what a treat we had today— our whole family got to go up in a hot air balloon unexpectedly (we were helping on the crew but didn’t expect to go up). Thank you pilot Paddy! Our oldest exclaimed before bed that today was the best day of her life!

Although it’s a bit rainy and chilly here in San Felipe, the view out our bathroom window isn’t too bad! :)

We made it to Mexico! Although we’re only staying 2 weeks instead of 2 months, due to our oldest having a broken leg, it will still be an adventure!

Sarah and I had fond memories of visiting Tucson A

Sarah and I had fond memories of visiting Tucson AZ before we had kids, so we were excited to be going back to spend a weekend there. Turns out, however, that a lot of the activities there just aren’t super fun for little ones (ghost tours, gun shows... it’s kind of a scary place!). Day one was sort of a bust, but day 2 we started out right with a cheap bottle of wine... from that start day 2 went a lot better :)

Although we love getting outside and seeing National Parks, sometimes a good old fashioned Theme Park is a lot of fun :). We had a rip-roaring good time at Old Tucson!

We had a rainy couple of days at Chiricahua National Monument... in fact, the rangers closed the road up the hill for the whole time we were there due to snow/ice so we never really got to see the monument. Guess we’ll need to add it to our list of places to come back to!

It seems like for the last month or so many of our camping spots have been less than spectacular... so we are super excited to have such a great spot to spend a few days at City of Rocks State Park in southern New Mexico.

On our way to Big Bend National Park we spent a few nights in Texas at Davis Mountains State Park. It was so nice to be around real trees for a bit, after not seeing them for a while in the desert landscape. We took advantage and set up a slack line, gymnastic rings, and a pulley system to hoist the kids up into the tree!

Portland, Oregon is our home base--- a land with lots of moisture.. so when we travel to the desert, although we *are* trying to escape the rainy weather, we still miss the things that rain brings (trees, plants). The Smith Spring hike at Guadalupe Mountains National Park gave us a little feeling of home with a babbling spring and all the colors that a fresh water source in the desert brings with it.

A highlight of Big Bend National Park was crossing over into Boquillas, Mexico across the Rio Grande by row boat and then getting a donkey ride into town.

Ok, now we can say we’ve seen Roswell. It was as cheesy as everyone said... but not a bad place to spend Halloween.

We've only been in a couple of slot canyons before

We've only been in a couple of slot canyons before, but we always love them. The slot canyon hike at Tent Rocks National Monument is definitely one not to miss while in New Mexico. We stayed at the nearby Cochiti Lake US Army Corps of Engineers campground for $12/nt., with showers! Can't complain about that.
