While we visited the El Paso, Texas area we camped at Franklin Mountains State Park. It was conveniently located within a 20 minute drive to El Paso and offered some hiking trails and solidarity.

We had been considering joining Harvest Hosts for a while now– a membership program that allows you to camp for free at farms, wineries, museums and more. While we were at Big Bend, Justin had a conversation with some campers who were members and decided it was time for us to join. Our first Harvest Host experience was staying at Licon Dairy in San Elizario, Texas. We had a great time!

We made it to Big Bend National Park and there were trees! Hurray! Don’t get me wrong, these were still some of the most inhospitable trees I’ve ever seen, Mesquite trees with daggers up to an inch and a half long every 1/2”. But, still, it gave the appearance of something that resembled a forest and they gave shade which was lovely!

Our plan was to head from Carlsbad, NM to Big Bend National Park. However, doing the drive in one shot would be about 5 hours, so we wanted to find a stop in the middle to break the drive in half. That place ended up being Davis Mountains State Park, and it was a beautiful place to spend a few days.

Our last few weeks had been very fast paced without any down days to break it up. Justin and I were itching for a day to just hang out and get odds and ends done and the girls were telling us in more than one way that they needed some time to play and to be in charge of what they did for the day.

From our current camping spot in a free dirt lot we were able to travel a half hour with Azul to get to the Guadeloupe Mountains. Not bad at all. This was the girls’ and my first time in Texas!

We started off our travel day to Carlsbad Caverns area by doing some much needed laundry in Roswell. I tell you, there is a lot to be said for warm clean laundry. Unfortunately my list of things to do in the morning was very lengthy and Justin’s was not therefore I had to give the laundry trust to him. Justin is a very competent human being but for some reason the laundry gnomes like playing tricks on him. Last time during this trip that I had Justin do laundry, one of FOUR pairs of the girls’ good wool socks disappeared. I went over the protocol I use so that I am sure that no gnomes are playing tricks on me. The result of this laundry trip with Justin in charge we gained one random sock! Haha, I guess the gnomes felt sorry for getting him into such trouble with me last time so they tossed in an extra this time around. 😛

Upon arriving in Roswell we were bombarded by what you would expect, aliens! The most popular by far was a wooden carved alien painted various colors, green being the most common. The RV park we stayed at also had plastic alien statues in various poses and some with props. And, lucky for the visitors, they were for sale.
